"Tormenting, elusive visions of structures and processes
(tormenting because of their compulsive return and
possession but also of their ever-changing fluidity) have
materialized as the backbone and essence of this book. My
choice of the building blocks, which are inevitably mere
words, I am aware, has been mostly unsuccessful in
conveying what I intended."
