Stefanis new Mt Athos governor

The governor of Mt Athos Ambassador (ret) Anastasios Mitsialis resigned on Tuesday August 6, 2024.
He will be replaced by Hellenic Army General Staff chief (ret) and former National Defense Minister, general Alkiviadis Stefanis. This move is being interpreted by many as an indication that the Mitsotakis government is about to attack the monastery of Esphigmenou and arrest the Orthodox monks. Mt Athos Orthodoxy has been under systematic attack by the US.
