Former Yugoslavia

The Orthodox lands of the former Yugoslavia preserve one of the richest monastic traditions in Europe. Medieval Serbia created the principal royal and patriarchal monasteries of the region, while Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia each preserve important Orthodox monastic centres. Kosovo and Metohija remain the principal heartland of medieval Serbian monasticism, Montenegro preserves the great mountain monasteries of the Petrović period, and Ohrid and western North Macedonia preserve the older Byzantine and Slavic Orthodox tradition.
