The Avaton sign of Mt Athos

The Avaton (Άβατον) is the longstanding prohibition that forbids women and female animals from entering the peninsula of Mount Athos in Greece. This rule has been in force for more than a thousand years.

At the border of the autonomous monastic community, official signs clearly state the prohibition.

History

The Avaton originates from Byzantine times. A formal imperial decree was issued in 1046 by Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos. The entire peninsula is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the presence of women has been forbidden since at least the 5th century according to tradition.

The Border

The land border lies near Ouranoupolis, close to the ruins of Zygou Monastery. A fence and multiple warning signs mark the boundary. Only men with a valid entry permit (diamonitirion) may enter Mount Athos.
