Cyprus
Cyprus preserves one of the oldest Orthodox monastic traditions in the eastern Mediterranean. Cypriot monasticism developed from Late Antiquity and flourished in the Byzantine period, especially in the Troodos Mountains and the remote hill country of the island. The monasteries of Cyprus combine Byzantine, Greek, and local traditions and remain among the most important spiritual centres of the Orthodox world.
