Ethiopia and Eritrea

Ethiopia and Eritrea possess one of the oldest and richest monastic traditions in Christianity. The Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Churches preserve an ancient Oriental Orthodox monasticism that developed in the highlands, in the deserts, and around the great monastic centres of Lake Tana, Tigray, Debre Libanos, and Lalibela. Many monasteries remain active and continue traditions that are more than a thousand years old.
