In search of God-the first step

"The motivation for the decision to embark on a project as
vast and as nebulous as the present one stems from several
sources some of which I suspect I could never name. One of
the most important was a compulsion to understand1
consciousness in myself but also universally. I believe that
the search for God is inextricably tied to the search for
consciousness and self. This is not a two-faceted issue,
understanding myself and understanding God. There is I
believe the imperative necessity that understanding myself is
a prerequisite for even asking questions about consciousness
and God. Understanding myself and understanding God is
one question. Any discussion on the existence of something
including my existence or the existence of God that bypasses
the ancient question of what being self is, is nebulous (cf.
Heidegger, M., 1996, in Being and Time). "
