A reference page for Athos Forum, arranged by region, with statistics, principal monasteries, Mount Athos, Meteora, the islands, and the major convents of Greece.

Greece

Greece preserves the most extensive and historically continuous monastic tradition in the Orthodox world. From Mount Athos and Meteora to Patmos, Crete, the Peloponnese, and the Aegean islands, Greek monasticism forms the foundation from which the later monastic traditions of the Balkans, Russia, and the Near East developed.
