Of the main monasteries which is the most traditional. less modern? Thanks

Average: 5 (25 votes)

I think Konstamonitou monastery is the least modernized. It is in the north of the peninsula, almost cut off/

Average: 5 (24 votes)

Simonopetra, Vatopedi are most modern, no spirituality.

What about the Russian?

Average: 5 (9 votes)

Russian monastery holds on to traditions, true Orthodoxy.

Average: 5 (6 votes)

I strongly believe to think that Simonospetra and Vatopedi have no spirituality. On the contrary Elder Joseph was making homilies regularly and many monks were following his paths at Vatopedi, while in Simonos Petra, the various horizons where come from the monks created a new dynamic in the enhancement of spirituality!

Average: 2 (9 votes)

Simonopetra monastery has a break, no continuity in "agioritiki" spiriuality. It started in 1973 by a self taught monk from Athens. His successor, the present abbot, igoumenos, is his friend who is also self taught.

Average: 5 (8 votes)

very hard for an American to make contact with Orthodoxy. Simonopetra has parted from Agioritic spirit in its modern revival by Aimilianos.

How can I have a religious experience? I cannot go to Athos. Can I chat with a monk?

Average: 5 (11 votes)

This is not an easy task. You can seek advice from Orthodox monks, however you should be prepared for a long difficult journey. You may begin here:

Who was St Nilus?

Average: 5 (10 votes)

St. Nilus usually refers to one of two important saints in Eastern Christianity. Here is a clear distinction:

Saint Nilus of Sinai (c. 4th–5th century)

Who he was: An ascetic monk and theologian associated with Mount Sinai, often identified as a disciple of St. John Chrysostom.
Role: Abbot and spiritual writer; a major voice of early Christian monastic asceticism.
Writings: Numerous letters and treatises on prayer, humility, self-control, and the spiritual life. His works are frequently cited in the Philokalia.
Importance: Bridges patristic theology and desert monastic practice; influential in Eastern Orthodox spirituality.
Feast day: November 12 (Eastern calendars).

Saint Nilus the Younger (St. Nilus of Rossano) (c. 910–1004)

Who he was: A Greek monk from Calabria (southern Italy), living during the Byzantine presence in Italy.
Role: Founder of Grottaferrata Abbey near Rome, which remains a center of Byzantine monasticism to this day.
Importance: Key figure in preserving Greek patristic learning and Eastern liturgical tradition in the Latin West.
Feast day: September 26.

Do the monks of Athos see God?

Average: 5 (12 votes)

No one has seen God ever. Read this https://www.google.gr/books/edition/Deus_Absconditus_The_Hidden_God/JGsu...

Monks of Athos are poorly educated, most of them. Some of them claim they see God or rather the Mother of God. On Athos it is all about Panagia. I may be said that God has been banished from the mountain.

Are there hesychasts on Athos today> Who? Where?

Average: 5 (9 votes)

There is one in Vigla near Megisti Lavra.

Average: 5 (2 votes)

It seems to me the monks have banished God from Athos.

Average: 4.5 (8 votes)

No, Athos is a sacred place.

Average: 5 (8 votes)

Correct, it is a sacred place. What I meant was the fact that mostly worship Virgin Mary and other monks (saints( rather than God.

Average: 5 (8 votes)

The worship of bones of dead monks detracts spirituality from Orthodox Athos. Also depiction of God. Islam is free of such practices.

Average: 5 (8 votes)

Yes, that is the bitter truth!

How can I visit Esfigmenou the rebel monastery?

Average: 5 (5 votes)

Not these days, a military operation cooking up.

Average: 5 (1 vote)

You break the law, if you visit Esphigmenou. To visit you should go to Thessaloniki and make contact with supporters of the monastery. You should be prepared to walk in the forest at night. By the way, the monks of Esphigmenou are not rebel, they and the monks of the Russian monastery are holding on to Orthodoxy as dictated in the church documents.
